Composer George Lloyd once stated that â€Å"The ancient Greeks have a knack of wrapping truths in myths.† These myths, ranging from the stories of the gods themselves to epic poems like Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey, teach the ancient Greeks lessons on different morals and how to live. Lessons of loyalty to loved ones, humans cause extra suffering to themselves, and sacrificing for an end goal can be found within The Odyssey. Loyalty to loved ones is heavily stressed as a lesson within The Odyssey. While Odysseus was lost at sea while trying to get home from the Trojan War, he is given multiple temptations to prevent him from returning to his family in Ithaca. As Odysseus is kept on the island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso, her temptations are revealed as Hermes appears to command her to release him: â€Å"And I welcomed him warmly, cherished him, even vowed/to make the man immortal, ageless, all his days†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (5.151-152). Despite being offered immortali ty if he stays, he declines as Odysseus only had returning to his family back in Ithaca on his mind. Odysseus runs into more enticement after landing in Phaeacia after leaving Calypso and being brought to the castle by Nausicaa, the princess of the nation. Her father, Alcinous, begins to offer his daughter to tempt him into staying: â€Å"I’d give you a house/and great wealth—if you chose to stay, that is† (7.359-7.360). S$1. 00 is the Primary Ones and Twos‘ pocket money for a day and they could not possibly spent all their money on one sausage! Bad Attitude To Children: The second issue is our school vendors’ attitude. Being in Primary Six, I seldom encountered someone scolding me or trying to cheat me of my money. However, I do often see lower primary pupils, especially the Primary Ones and Twos, being have to bear the vendor’s temper when he or she was feeling not particularly well. Once, I was queuing at the snack store when I saw a Primary One girl. She handed up 50 cents for something that costs 70 cents. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the store owner reply that the snack costs 70 cents and pointed to a sign behind the snacks that labelled â€Å"S$0. 0†. â€Å"Read! † the vendor had said impatiently, eyes bulging. The girl took back her money and backed away fearfully. I think that the vendor should not behave like that. Most likely, the girl did not learn to recognize money yet and could not count the amount. The vendor should have patiently told her that what she handed was 50 cents and not 70 cents and help he r find the money. Slow Serving: The third problem is one that pupils of all levels come across, that the vendors are too slow at serving. Once, my friends and I were dismissed late. We tried to grab a chicken chop from the second stall. I did not want to eat anything else. We queued for 15 minutes before we were served, and were almost late for class. I noted that the vendors, especially the new store number 2, â€Å"Asian Favorites†, was very casual in their movements. The second store so-called â€Å"aunties† often stopped what they were doing to talk to each other, and their movements were as slow as you can get. Conclusion: Perhaps the school could install â€Å"Satisfactory Testers† at the side of each stall. These machines comprise of two buttons, one smiley face and one sad face. If the number of smiley faces for the stall each month is above 50% of the total number replies, the stall could remain. If the stall had less than 50% smiley faces for two consecutive months, the school could change the vendor. This way, we would have included the whole school’s judgement. The Jungle (784 words) Essay The JungleThe Jungle is one of the most famous American novels ever written. Most people associate The Jungle with the federal legislation it provoked. Americans were horrified to learn about the terrible sanitation under which their meat products were packed. They were even more horrified to learn that the labels listing the ingredients in tinned meat products were full of lies. The revelation that rotten and diseased meat was sold without a single consideration for public health infuriated American citizens. They consumed meat containing the ground remains of poisoned rats and sometimes-unfortunate workers who fell into the machinery for grinding meat and producing lard. Within months of The Jungles publication, the sale of meat products dropped dramatically. The public outcry of indignation led to the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act, less than a year after the novels publication. However, contrary to what many people believe, Sinclair did not write The Jungle to incite the American government into regulating the sanitation of the meat packing industry. The details regarding the unsanitary and disgusting conditions in meat packing factories are background details of a much larger picture. Sinclair wrote his novel to provoke outrage over the miserable working conditions of industrial wage labor. He detailed the lack of sanitation in the factories in order to provoke sympathy and outrage for the impoverished factory workers. The germs and disease inside the meat packing establishments were indeed a public health concern, but it was far more of a concern for the workers. Sinclair portrays the various sicknesses they suffer as a result of their working environments. Sinclair wrote his novel as an appeal to Socialism, a political theory based on the writings of Marx. He follows Jurgiss Lithuanian immigrant family into the disgusting tenements and meat packing factories of Chicago. There, they suffer the loss of all their dreams of success and freedom in America. They find themselves leashed to the grinding poverty and misery of the city slums despite all their best efforts. Sinclairs purpose is to display the evils of capitalism as an economic system. Sinclair was bemused by the public reaction to his phenomenally successful novel. He said that he had aimed for Americas heart, but had ended by hitting it in the stomach. Jurgis suffers misfortune after misfortune. He joins the union only to see the union fail to improve working conditions. His wife and child die in rapid succession. He becomes a wandering tramp, the victim of the casual cruelty of those better off than he. Finally, he joins the Chicago criminal underworld where money comes easily to him for the first time since his arrival in America. However, that fails to save him as well. He returns to the remnants of his family only to discover that Marija has become a prostitute. Marijas entrance into prostitution culminates in the essential accusation that Sinclair levels at capitalism. Throughout the Jungle charges capitalism with trafficking in human lives.
